Michael, who is originally from the Philippines, has built an impressive career in machine health and condition monitoring. This eventually led him to Mauritius, where he now works as a Health Monitoring Engineer at SmartFleetDX.
In his current role, he plays a pivotal part in ensuring that fleets across the SmartFleetDX ecosystem operate smoothly by providing advanced data insights and condition monitoring, as well as collaborating closely with clients.
Here’s what a typical day in his life looks like.
A calm routine before the data rush
Every morning, he walks into the SmartFleetDX office and heads straight for his essential first step: a glass of water. Only then does he settle in and begin his day.
He starts by checking his emails for anything urgent from clients or internal teams.
He then immediately verifies that SmartFleetDX Insights is running seamlessly and that all machines are transmitting data as expected. If anything looks off, he’s already on it before anyone notices.
Alerts, notifications and quick actions
One of his key responsibilities revolves around Qlik Alerting, which notifies clients if their machines show abnormal conditions.
If a critical alert appears, he prioritises it immediately, reviews it, validates the issue, and contacts the client so they can take timely action.
Transforming data into insights
Following his morning checks, Michael moves on to generating reports, which is an important aspect of how SmartFleetDX supports its clients in making decisions. He prepares reports ranging from daily updates and weekly summaries to performance reviews and fleet condition assessments. Thanks to the efficiency of SmartFleetDX Insights, reports that previously took him almost a whole day in his previous roles now take just about an hour.

SmartFleetDX Insights enhancements and data tuning
Michael spends part of his afternoon reviewing and refining the criteria within SmartFleetDX Insights. As the system evolves and new data patterns emerge, he considers:
• How incoming data should be processed
• What improvements can be made
• How thresholds and rules should be updated
He also ensures that newly connected machines appear in the system correctly and transmit reliable data.
On-site missions
Although most of his work is digital, Michael regularly visits client sites for essential activities, such as:
• Meetings and reviews
• Monitoring how clients act on condition monitoring insights
• Troubleshooting communication or data transmission issues
• Demonstrating new dashboards and tools
These interactions aren’t just technical, they're also about building trust and ensuring that clients understand how to maximise the benefits of SmartFleetDX Insights.
Life in Mauritius
Working in Mauritius has been a refreshing change for him. It is well organised and calmer than the intense environment of mine sites. Although he is far from home, he has embraced the island lifestyle. He is even making progress with learning new French words, and the office can confirm that he has mastered bonjour and merci.
From technician to engineer to data specialist
Michael’s background in mechanical engineering, field service, condition monitoring and technical advisory has prepared him perfectly for his current role.
Since joining SmartFleetDX in February 2022, his role has evolved alongside the company’s innovation journey. He is now not only monitoring machine health, but also empowering clients with the knowledge they need to prevent breakdowns, optimise performance and transform the way they operate.
